Cobia is at Buckroe beach pier

People caught 3 cobia in one day. Two of them over 40 lbs, I wanted to go try my luck bad but couldn't make it. Just FYI if anyone wanna try their luck.

I did some cobia fishing research. It seems that they bite anything, usually people sight cast for them. If the weather weren't too bad, I would have gone to try my luck with them but it's thunderstorm. Personally, I would bring spoons, gotcha plugs, and jig. I would do bottom fishing around the pier and see if they show up. I'm not even sure if my real can handle them . The biggest reel that I have is shimano sahara 4000.

You don't have to man. I hate to fish shoulder to shoulder which will probably happen at Buckroe for the next couple weeks. Just launch the kayak from the surf and fish around the pier area. It would suck if you hook into a good fish, get tangle and lose the fish.

I will be down that way this weekend. I heard they were still off NC last time I was there, but was hoping they would be around by now. I think you are better off live lining some croaker, spot, or eels. I will most likely pick up some eels to avoid wasting time catching something else for bait, and head out there early Sunday morning. I think Klevar1 is planning on meeting me down there also, but I didn't ask him yet if he wanted to try for cobia...we were going to try some other spots near Buckroe for other species.

I saw a cobia (and an unwanted shark) being caught off a pier in Nags Head, NC. The method they used to catch cobia is one rod is has a sinker that is needed to hold the bait rig in an area. The second rod usually has live bait, such as a small blue or spot attached to it and they use some kind of ring to attach it to the sinker line. The live fish swims around on the top of the water, then you can see the cobia come up and swallow it - fight on! All the people on the end of the pier pull in their rods because the cobia is going nuts and is pulling the person who caught it all over the place. Very exciting.

Cobia is one strong fish- about the same fight as a jack, so eat your Wheaties...and a word of caution- never try to land a green fish- they go beserk and make a mess of coolers, tackle boxes, etc. inside a boat- can't imagine what they could do to a kayak- and we usually use a live bait in a chum slick- like has been said- they aren't picky eaters- they eat crabs, small fish, clams, etc...and a big yellow banana tube lure works sight casting- that is what I caught my biggest cobia on off Rodanthe pier on a Abu 6500(c) and a 7' popping rod with 12# mono-

I will be bringing my bat along in case I actually catch a keeper sized cobia. I have never caught one before, only heard stories and strategies for catching them. I hope the bat does the trick, I do not want to share my kayak with one while it is all flopping around.

I am planning to pick up some live eels and also hoping I can get some crabs at super h before I leave for bait and chum slick. I will use live eel on one rod, crab on another, and have one one of my spinning rods rigged with a bkd in case I see one cruising around and can sight cast to it. Looks like I may be alone out there Sunday, pm me if anybody wants to join. I will launch either right a buckroe or maybe at Wallace's.

Wondering if I should use an egg sinker on the eel and let it suspend closer to bottom or just let it swim under a ready rig? I guess I will try both. Would Owner ssw cutting points in 8/0 or 10/0 be a good hook to use?

Just remember the tide runs strong and be prepared to contend with lots of crab pots around Buckroe Beach- personally I would fish off back river a couple of hundred yards off the beach in 15-20 feet of water...
