  • Possible radio problem.

I have a Standard Horizon 850 hand held and have been very happy with it. However, today I tried to do a radio check with ANP water taxi and struck out twice. I was receiving well, the screen showed TX when I pushed the button but I got no response.

    Any ideas?

    John,

Is it possible the taxi is instructed to not do radio checks?

I don't know. I'm just guessing ... but that taxi is very busy transmitting throughout the day based on the traffic I hear from them when I am on the Severn. Maybe it's company policy for them to speak only for official business or emergencies. Maybe someone on here knows the precise community etiquette/regulations for radio checks. (I'd like to know that myself.)

Most of the radio checks I hear are between fellow fishermen and charter captains.

      Mark,

Usually I too contact other captains but today no one was on the air except the water taxi. You may have a point though, I would like to know the answer.

Sea Tow operates a automated radio check in the Annapolis area on channel 27. They play back your recorded transmission so you can hear how it sounds. I've used it a few times. The only problem is more than once it has taken 15 minutes or so to hear the message back but normally it's about 5 minutes.

Thanks Katfish, that's good to know. It'll also be like getting something back for all the years I paid for tow insurance that I didn't use.
