  • OBX Fishing Trip (Avon) Aug 3-10

I'm headed to the Outer Banks this Sunday for a week's RnR. Taking my SIK and my brand-new Hobie Outback. I've fished in the SIK down there before by myself but I have a 4.5 hour guided kayak fishing tour scheduled with a local OBX guide this year. I've got about 10 hours of fishing in the Outback on the Magothy but it only took me 5 minutes to realize what a great craft it is. Thanks to all the posters who analyzed the various pedal kayaks--very helpful! I'll let everyone know how it goes when I get back...

Im heading down there (to Rodanthe) the week of September 13 thru 20. If you are down there the same time and want to hit the water together, let me know. I'm taking my Slayer and plan on hitting Pea Island as well as Hattereras, Oregon Inlet, and the Sound. I've never fished those area's so I'm open for suggestions on where to go.

dang... Gonna have to settle for waving at you while I"m heading home. I'll be in S.Nags Head from the 7th thru the 13th.
I'm getting bigger tires for my trailer so I can haul the yak down to the surf along the National Seashore and surf launch. Probably hit the sound too.

Ocean side sand bars change so often that the fishing hot spots will vary year to year. The only surf spot that's consistently good is Cape Point. It gets pretty crowded there on shore... and due to the wind, waves, and rips you would have to be crazy to even think about trying to launch in that surf.

On the sound side, I've caught some large flounder in the Davis Channel near Oregon Inlet (its about a half mile paddle out into the Pamilco Sound). Most of the sound is very skinny along the OBX due to the sands blowing and washing over the islands. The best access to deeper water soundside is to launch from Roanoke Island and hit the Croatan Sound.

No need to drive anywhere. Just go to the sound down here. Even the Canadian hole around sunset. If you see swirling on the water that's the puppy drum. You can wade out in sound during day and cast into the holes.
