  • Chasing spot tails-outer banks trip 10/17-10/21

Just got back from an awesome fishing trip to the banks. We had some great weather and the fish were very cooperative. In attendance, dinscore, Brandon J, nitefly, and myself. We targeted redfish primarily and were rewarded with some drag screaming fun. Fish tended to be in the upper end of the slot size from 24-30 inches. My daily totals were 8 on day one, then 6, on day 3 only 1 (blowout windy day) and 6 on day four. Most of our Redfish were caught on the flats in the oregon inlet region. The bite tended to be best around either end of the low tide. At times we encountered fish schooled up in huge masses that were upwards of 50 or more fish. It was hard to stay on these school and remarkable how they would just vanish even in 1-2 foot of water. Other times we picked off individual tailing fish, or small clusters. The key was looking for slight disturbances in the water, tailing, swirls, or baitfish fleeing. Once you found the fish all you had to do was get your lure in the zone and hold on! I think our most popular bait of the trip was the Z man paddle tails as they held up incredibly well against the abuse a red can give. Otherwise the reds did give everyone's gear a good shakedown and at times they did find the weak points such as knots, leaders, hooks and even line guides. Another unforgettable trip. Thanks to everyone for making it happen!

Excellent outing, especially for nitefly whose initial trip for reds this year did not end well.

Good things do happen to those who persist!

Good times! Chasing fish on the flats is a blast.

Although, your report makes me disappointed that the flats bite behind Assateague never developed this year

Great friends and epic fishing, who could ask for more? I'm going through all the gopro footage from the trip and grabbed a couple of stills. Working on the video edit now.

Lots of fun! I learned the importance of proper drag setting on this trip. And yes Mark, it was good to get on them! I did the worst numbers wise, but I had blast. Great group of guys, good fishing and fantastic food all weekend. I did use my Hobie Outback and it did ok on the flats.

Great report guys, sounds like a great trip.

Nitefly - your comment on the Outback, would you expect it not to perform well for any reason. Only asking as I just picked one up for fishing the flats on FL Gulf Coast.

The only problem I run in to with my Outback in that area is running out of water. I have been a 1/2 mile or more from land in ever and dragging my yak in 3 inches of water. Other than that it should be fine.

                          Dave,
I think the "release" shot is a real beauty! (I should say way to go Brandon) I'd hang that on my wall. Here's to having the courage to bring the DSLR along. Awesome shots! Can't wait to do it again next year
