North Carolina OBX - Kitty Hawk Bay redfish - Oct 18-22

Here's a few pics from our second annual OBX kayak fishing outing. This year we stayed in Kill Devil Hills, fishing the Colington Creek islands in Kitty Hawk Bay. The redfish bite was solid with numerous landed on popping corks in the 19-23" range. Culinary highlights include pulled pork tacos, deer tenderloin, and grilled jalapeno dove breasts wrapped in bacon. Already looking forward to our third annual outing in October 2014.

I've caught a few redfish in the sound up near Duck. Great photos.
So where do you launch your kayaks to fish from Colington?

Watching the video I couldn't help but notice how you rigged your popping corks. It that a preferred method? I have always tied the main line to the swivel at the top of the cork and then the leader to the bottom. I can see an advantage in the ability to change the lure depth without having to completely re-tie, just wondering. The only place I have ever had them corks work well was in Pamlico Sound.

The popping cork in the video is the Outcast 3" cork from MidCoast. I'd done some research and a lot of folks recommend their products for trout and redfish. I bought four of their corks for the trip, all in different styles. I liked this cork just fine and it cast great, however it didn't have enough surface action IMO. It has a swivel at the front end of the cork that you tie your main line as well as the leader to (so lure depth can only be adjusted by retying the leader). The next day I tried out the Rage from MidCoast and it offered a bit better surface noise and seemed to cast just as far as the Outcast. It's definitely the one I'll be throwing a majority of the time on the next trip.
