  • Magic Touch Charter - New Rochelle, NY

Fished with Captain Drew on the Magic Touch out of New Rochelle, NY on Friday for my girlfriend's birthday. She really wanted to catch some rock but they are tough to come by with all this heat and during the day. We thought we might get lucky but we only found blues trolling.

Big Blues though! Caught about 10 blues, kept 7 for the table. Then we caught 8 Porgies to bring home as well.

Captain Drew was a very fun charter and accommodated our crew very nicely. If you're around NYC you should check out New Rochelle, it looked like an awesome place to fish from a Kayak!

    Here's some shots:

They were hard fighters! I kept wishing I was on my kayak though! Not that fun with heavy wire line and big gear. Still a blast though!

Haha thanks! I have no idea why we don't see more porgy's anywhere. The captain was talking about how great the tog fishing was off this rockpile. Looked like a mile or two paddle and money structure in between for rock. I am thinking of trying there later this fall.

Do any of you all fish for tog and if so, where?

I won a nice dry top at J-Bay this past year and I am thinking about making a trip for tog, maybe go check out the concrete ships or something before kiptopeke heats up. How heavy of gear do you need?

Looks like you had a great trip. That porgy looks good

As for tog gear I'm no expert but a Med-Hvy rod and 20 - 30lb braid should work fine. They love the rocks and you need to get them off the bottom quick.

If they get hung up in a hole open the bail and smoke a cig. I have had them hung up in rocks and done this. Sometimes they will swim out again after a while

Good to know, I hear you can find them year round in the bay and even in the Potomac... I need to get out there and do some recon.

Haha you had me worried on your other post! Good to hear... I had a perfect rod for tog that I gave to a buddy because he wanted something to troll with that was smaller than a penn 209. It was a 6ft heavy with a penn 109 on it... I have another 109, might need to find another light heavy rod to pull those suckers out of the rocks with... I don't think my normal limp ugly sticks will have the backbone to pull them away fast enough from what I've read.
