  • Smith Mountain Lake Dock Report

I headed down to Smith Mountain Lake over the weekend to spend some time with my family. I opted not to bring the kayak on account of the snow and free time forecast.... Figures I would wake up and see about 50 seagulls diving out in the channel by our house, well out of casting range! I scavenged the house and found a single bucktail I bought while I was there over the summer and grabbed one of the rods I left down there. The line was pretty bad mono and I couldn't find a trailer for bucktail but I figured if the school came close enough I may have a chance.

After a few hours of periodically checking back in the birds were somewhat close so I headed down to the dock and started casting, 1 miss and this fish! I have been chasing stripers at Smith Mountain lake for many years and this is the first ever from our dock! Now if I had just brought my kayak I know I would have caught more!

    Used to fish more.

Nice catch. There is nothing wrong with catching fish in ways other than kayak fishing. I enjoy fishing whenever, wherever, and however the opportunities present themselves.

Considering how many hours I have spent paddling around that lake without catching a striper it was really quite funny to catch one off the dock!

I just found that the Smith Mountain Lake water may not be warm. It looks there is a hydro, not nuclear power plant. In that case, some spots can be really deep. It will take 4 hours to get there. Hmmm... perhaps, a day after a Hokie's game.....

The water will be very clear - perhaps a free-diving practice place???

Fishing - It's not a random big fish. It's the first fish you've been pursuing...

That is funny and strange how you have never caught one on the kayak before... I would think that It would be easier from a kayak.
