Found this in my engine today. He finally came out several hours later after I parked in the grass.

I had one of those living under my neighbor's stairs. I checked in on it every day. About 2 weeks ago, it shed its skin which was about 5' long. After that, I didn't see it again. Everyone was afraid of it. Unfortunately they don't know these guys are good. 2 neighbors removed their entire landscaping from their front yard because they found snakes in there from time to time. Oh brother.... :-)

I don't view rat snakes kindly.
One of my other hobbies in addition to fishing is raising canaries. I raise a particular breed of canaries called American Singers for exhibition in song contests. Each fall I take them to shows in OH, NY, NJ, MI and MD.
I keep my birds in my basement. On three occasions in the not too distant past I went downstairs to find a rat snake in one of my cages so stuffed with canaries that it could not retreat through the bars.
It wasn't until I found and blocked the point of entry to my basement (a small opening near the exterior water spigot) that the carnage stopped.Mark

Interesting. It makes sense that they eat birds. I had a nest in one of my trees and soon after finding the snake, I didn't see the finches anymore. Mystery solved.

Wait a second. There are two people here that raise canaries?! Who would have thought. I didn't even know there was such a hobbie as song bird exhibitions. Good stuff. I bet it sounds peaceful in your houses.

Yak Fish and Billy Rocket,
Yes, it usually sounds like springtime all year long in my house with the birds singing.
I breed them in the depth of our winter so it is even more pleasing to hear their chicks peeping when it is icy outside.
This year's batch of chicks are presently maturing and learning to sing. By fall they will be in top notch musical form and ready to hit the road to the exhibitions.Last edited by Mark; 06-12-2014, 05:12 PM.Mark

I had to pull down two of those that had been climbing up the exterior wall at my wife's work last summer. She called in a panic worried about them being near small children (she runs a dance studio) but they are pretty harmless and do a good job keeping rodent population under control.
