  • For those wanting to fish Hart Miller Island

Looking for a new adventure I fished HMI today. I'd never tried it nor did I know where to launch. When I got there I talked to someone who lived there on Miller Island. He and the others that I talked to in the area (people were super nice) said that the ramps were all county owned....just the small 30' x 90' patch. There's small launches at the ends of many of the streets. So there's no need to paddle all the way from Rocky Point. The launch is sandy, but it's only a short bit. It worked well. Parking is pretty limited, as in, none at the ramp. So they said I could park along the grass. There's no curbs or anything that looks like parking in the neighborhood so I was just careful to be out of the way. Everyone pretty much said that people are cool and not to worry.

I've got the full report with photo descriptions on Facebook....not to send you multiple places but I'm trying to keep my fishing log there as a constant database for my own reference.

Thanks for the report, but I'm a little confused, It's not that far of a paddle to Hart Miller from Rocky point if you launch from the ramp out by the point. Where are the soft launches at the end of the streets? Across back river from Rocky point?

Miller Island puts you way closer if you want to fish the eastern side of HMI. The soft launches are on the northern side of Miller Island on some of the numbered streets. 2nd and 5th had soft launches and so did several others.

Definitely not a good area to fish from a yak during the summer on weekends. The boat traffic coming and going to HMI can be crazy.
That area can get some nice rock in the fall when the rock head into the rivers and theres a lot less boat traffic.
Still not the best place to fish IMO. Pretty shallow with a muddy bottom all over that area. usually plenty of perch and channel cat though.

You said you went to craighill light and my jaw dropped!! That would be a helluva paddle or pedal from there. Then I saw your pics. That's not actually craig hill light where you were. Craighill light house is way south of there between man-o-war shoal and fort howard. Not really sure what that lights called. Probably Millers island light.

I still want to get out there and fish the new rock jetties around pleasure island sometime. I've seen those parks you mentioned on the map before and always wondered if we could launch at them. Theres actually 12 of them. 1 at the end of each street 1st-12th. I've also wondered and thought about asking about launching from Bills Boats Marina right there at the cut. They have a ramp and floating piers. Went there a couple times to ask but no one was there each time I went.

The locals told me it was called Craighill. It looks like the full name is Craighill Channel Lower Rear Lighthouse. Here's the link: http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=415

Great report Alan! On a side note, I think some people appreciate the quick summary in the post with the full on story on your external site. I started my blog with the same intention you stated. It's nice to have one area where you can go back and review previous trips, etc.
