  • Anne Arundel Water Access Committee Meeting Wed 10/8/14 6 pm Millersville MD

    Hello all,

There's an important meeting of the Anne Arundel Public Water Access Committee this Wednesday, 10/8/14, at 6 pm at the DPW facility, 445 Maxwell Frye Road, Millersville MD 21108. This is your opportunity to tell a candidate for County Executive that you want more water access. George Johnson, the Democratic candidate, will be at the meeting. Steve Schuh, the Republican candidate, has a conflict and will meet with some members of the WAC separately.

I'm going with a kayak on my car. We need a parking lot full of yaks.

Please come to the meeting. Especially in this digital age, showing up at an inconvenient time in an inconvenient place shows that people care about water access. There's a rule of thumb that says every person that attends a public meeting represents 100+ people who are not there. This is the most important WAC meeting of the year.

    Agenda

    Meet the Candidate Night

    • County Executive candidate George Johnson will attend. Here is an opportunity to share your ideas about improving public water access. Candidate Steve Schuh has a schedule conflict but will meet with some committee members before the WAC meeting. A summary of the discussion with Delegate Schuh will be reviewed.

    • Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation & Parks will give an update on access plans & projects.

    • Water Trails Report

    Thank you!

This is part of what's at stake. In the last year the county opened Homeport Farm Park and Jack Creek Park, dropped the expensive permit requirement for Beverly-Triton Beach Park and opened a new water access point at Shady Side Park. *But* there are still *9* significant "closed" waterfront public parklands in the county.

    Anne Arundel County
    Significant “Closed” Waterfront Public Parkland
    10/2/14

South River Farms Park 182.3 acres
    South River south shore
    acquired 1985

    Beachwood Park 71 acres
    Magothy River north shore
    acquired 2002

    Weinberg Park 235 acres
    Rock Creek east shore
    acquired 2005

    Solleys Cove 76.7 acres
    Marley Creek south shore
    acquired 1998-99

    Stoney Creek Park 200 acres
    Stoney Creek west shore
acquired 1998 (final parcel acquired 2011)

    Spriggs Farm Park 54 acres
    Magothy River south shore
    acquired 2011

    Mayo Beach Park 20.1 acres
Chesapeake Bay at the south shore of the South River
    acquired 1976

    Thomas Point Park 41.2 acres
Chesapeake Bay at the north shore of the South River
    acquired 1962

Franklin Point State Park 477 acres
    Chesapeake Bay at Churchton
DNR retained 2005 after county declined acquisition

They're not going to get opened unless we ask for them.

If you want to locate these "closed parks", look at page 43 of the Anne Arundel County 2013 Final Draft Land Preservation, Parks and Recreation Plan (LPPRP).

      http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/lpprp.cfm

Please come to the WAC meeting and ask for each and every one of these parks to be officially opened. They were bought with public money and they should be open to the general public.

I hope they decide to open public park to the public this year.
