I joined Inshoremac today on Cuckold creek, which was in a much more enjoyable condition than yesterday. Inshoremac got there at 6:30 as he enjoys fishing in the dark. I arrived at a much more reasonable 8:00 with the sun peaking over the trees and the air starting to warm. Immediately saw the birds were working and headed off to the hot spots. Had 4 fish in the next 30 minutes and one 20" in the cooler before I even saw Inshoremac and he just started catching fish at the same time as me. Next hour had fish breaking and birds squawking while we had a blast being in the middle of the mayhem. Our most effective method was to troll around the breaking fish area as you could rarely get to them in time. My partner really started to catch nice ones towards the end of the bite and put a 22" and a 20" on his stringer. I added a 19" to round out the limits and we each had double digits for the morning. All the fish came off 3-4" paddle tails with light weight to get them down only 2-4'. Strangely these fish were kind of pecking at the lure as I only had 2 give me the rockfish slam. Really glad I was able to have my rod in hand to detect the bites and drop the bait back to them. Most fish were caught within 20 yards of shore in 3-5" of water. The large schools of minnows I had seen Friday were still around but I didn't see many alewives.
Ran into OVBoy when we were taking out. He lives 2 houses from the launch and was putting insulation in his crawl space for the winter. All I could think was - huh, who needs to be warm when the fish are running.
