  • Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Sat. 10/25/14

I really wanted to go south today. Way south... Images of redfish danced in my head. Unfortunately, I got to sleep very late last night, and it would not have been safe for me to drive the 4 hour down. So I slept in, and headed East instead. I stopped at Sandy Point State Park to see my favorite bridge.

The water temp was 60. There was some wind, and some waves, but nothing too bad. There were also a LOT of boats fishing. I think the recent article in the MSSA magazine about how to fish the BB gave some folks the idea.

There was a lot of activity. Small stripers breaking everywhere were attracting birds, who in turn were attracting the boats. It was easy to catch a bunch of small bass. I tried not to at first, and jigged deep instead, looking for some big ones, but no luck there. Only some small ones near the surface had a taste of my lure.

I finally hooked into something deep, not particularly big. It turned out to be my personal best WP, at a fat 12.5. OK, 12.25. It bit my 1oz bucktail tipped with a Berkeley shad or something like that. So i decided to go after perch! I switched to a 4" gulp mullet and went to work. I did catch 2 more perch in the 10" range, but mostly, a whole bunch of little -- but hard-fighting -- striperitos. I was getting them at every cast for a while as the incoming current ripped past the eastern rockpile. I decided to leave them alone and went home under the sunset.

That's a bay monster for sure. Lol on the lure size compared to the fish.
