Patapsco River 11/12/2014

in hindsight not the most intelligent decision i've made... but it has been over a month since i was able to get out with work wind rains ect. and i was chomping at the bit.... launched and paddeling by 7am. water was like glass thats the good part... the FOG didn't look that bad from shore but it was much more dense on the water, at the launch it wasn't that bad till i got out in the river proper, ZERO VISABILITY!!! the fog didn't start to burn off till @ 9 to 9:30. i had no idea where i was on that river i do have a depth finder but no gps. i did manage to land a 22" striper that was fat and healthy before the fog lifted...putting the paddle down to fight the fish i got turned around and kinda lost what orientation i had on the river. it was a literal blind paddle till the fog lifted. i think it would take an act of GOD to put myself in that situation again. alls well that ends well...bad decision this morning resulting in a valuable lesson.

Wow, scary feeling. GPS is well worth the money....and still caught a striper, good job!

I live close to the mouth of the Patapsco.

Before I got out of bed this morning I could hear the passing cargo ships blowing their fog horns.

Whenever I hear them I know it's foggy even without looking outside.

You're very fortunate to get back to your launch safely and you caught a nice fish to boot. A good day for you with a little scare and a big lesson for us all. Thanks for posting.

Always good to keep a compass on board, just in case...I guess a phone w maps/gps could also help you in a pinch.
