  • Slow Day at Curtis Bay

Launched out of Ft Armistead around 8am this morning, thought the warm water discharge might be the ticket...or maybe jigging around the Key Bridge pilings. Right away Mustafa hooked and released two shorts (17.5"). Thought, "Man this is going to be good!" Almost three hours later nobody had hooked another fish. Then Rob finally got hooked up and boated a 25.5"er. I decided to go back over an area I was marking fish earlier, and quickly hooked up with a double, 20.5" and a 25". Called they guys on the radio to come over where I was, circled back around and landed a 17.5", circled back one more time and hooked one just a tick over 20". I only hooked 4 fish today, but three were keeper size so I still managed to bring home a limit...pretty good considering I thought it was going to be a SKUNK.

I caught all 4 of my fish over 24 feet of water, with a 2 oz jig head and 6" paddle tail.

    Picture time.

    Pre-launch rigging:

    Len starting to troll.

Rob getting ready to start fishing.

Mustafa and John searching for fish.

Rob with the big fish of the day.

Some kind of cargo ship going under the bridge.

25" Rock, ties my PB...this time I didn't fall off the kayak though.

    Fatties.

Cowgirl cleaning the catch. Oddly enough, the stomachs of both fish were completely empty...must have just started feeding for the day.

I couldn't get that black and white fellow out of my kayak. Trolled up to 14oz of weight to get down to the 50ft channel bed. Never reached the bottom where they were schooled up. Unsuccessfully jigged for a while and then trolled in 25ft of water where the action was for Cowpokey. No love, but it was great seeing the ole crew again! WTG Carter, Mustafa, and Rob and great fishing with you Len, John, and Paul.

I am glad that some of your caught a few. I had too many obligations to make it out this week, so thanks for the report and especially the pictures (you guys knows my memory loves the pictures ) so I can feel that I was with some fellow Snaggedliners.

You angered the kayak fishing gods going out on a PB. You will need to make peace with that.

We will be fishing somewhere next Saturday...not sure where, but it should be a reasonable drive. When we figure out where hopefully we do a better job of posting a launch time/location.

It was a slow day, but after not getting to go out a couple of times, even with all the wind and cold, it was great being on the water with good friends!

Luckily I was right next to Carter when he caught that 20" so I called it and he generously gave it to me... So I at least got to go home with dinner....

and we loved every bit of it....

Did you cook it on the fire outside or in the oven..and did you still have the scales on?

I de boned it and didn't scale it. I cooked it on the grill scale side down and never flipped it. I've roasted it in the over like that before, and I would scale it then since you don't need the scales to protect it. Both ways taste great but I was in the mood to grill it.

I actually love the skin! But since the scales were still on and they were burned to a crisp it wasn't going to be tasty to eat the whole thing LOL.

What we did do though is scoop out the fatty layer on the inside of the skin (which is the tasty part of the skin really). What's left are the scales and the actual skin material (like plain paper)

Nice to know there's still some to be caught further up in the water column...my last patapsco trip they were holding around 50 ft....frustratingly below my range.
