Waysons Corner tomorrow morning

Having been out of town during the latest round of nice weather, my cabin fever is becoming overwhelming. I stopped by Wason's Corner today while runnning errands and it was packed. Talked to some of the guys there and it seems that perch (both yellow and white) bit is on. Guys were pulling them in pretty regularly.

Even though tomorrow morning isnt going to be as nice as today, I am going to head out there. My basic plan is to launch and make my way south of the bridge and anchor up a few hundred yards down river once I find a nice downed tree. Run a top/bottom rig on one rod while playing with some tiny flasher jigs with an other.

My start time is up in the air, it looks like high tides are at 700/730 and low is at 230pm, so I might aim for the middle of the day so the tide can take me back to launch. If anyone feels like sharing a day of clouds and mud flats, let me know, I can pick a specific time.

Complete skunk fest.

Launched around 10am this morning and stayed out until around 2pm. I forgot my "relief" bottle and didn't see a good spot to beach so I had to head in. While there were a ton of guys bank fishing, no one seemed to be doing well. I thought I had anchored up in a good spot but not even a nibble.



I really need a heavier anchor and a longer rope, right now I only have about 30' so I cant get a good hold in more than 5-6' of water. The current was so strong today that trying to cast to the shore was impossible as the yak would drift too fast. If I can make it out later this week I might use the yak to get myself further down stream and then beach and fish from shore. I really lack the patience for bait fishing and not being able to pace around was driving me nuts. Still, it was nice to get out and I cannot wait until it warms up enough to ditch the drysuit.

What weight were you using?

1oz. My heaviest rod is only a M so I didn't want to go much higher. Even at 1oz there is no real fineness to landing a perch, kinda takes some of the fun away. I think if I could have anchored further from the shore I could have been more effective.

Basically no love from the fish.

I paddled... drifted, a little further down from you.. worked the area.

I fellow in a small outboard was near me... he had no success either.
We worked the area south of the bridge for a while.

He went upstream and came and told me to go, which is what I call Back Creek.
Its the first "big" creek up around the corner from the bridge.
He said he caught a couple of yellow perch there off the bottom.

If you didn't know... there is a deep hole there.. it goes down about 20feet.

Well anyway.. went there... no love.

There was a bank fisherman... we talked for a couple of hours as we fished the area.

He was using blood worms.. he was pretty much local to the area...
Looking back... it was kinda funny because about every ten minutes he would say..
"Damn" "I can believe I haven't caught anything !"

I got out of the water about 7:30PM... didn't really hear any reports of anything happening.
Although... I did overhear one fellow say he caught a handful of small yellow on grass shrimp.


I didn't really use the bait too much. Tried a little.
I tossed spinners with small white gulps, small minnow gulps, small florescent green gulps.

Those grass shrimp sure are stinky... I can see why you didn't want to keep them in the fridge :-)

I was thinking about going out Monday or Tuesday...
Somewhere else..
But when I looked at the weather this morning
I saw 25 degrees for Monday morning... so about 9am I started prepping...
Put 6pound line on my reels.. etc etc.. then one last ditch...
Shall I go, or stay...
I logged on to Snagged and saw you post and figured...
The only thing worse than not catching fish is not going...
Drew is going.. Wayson's is workable.. so I went.

And thanks again for the bait. Hopefully I can return the favor sometime.

One other side note... not that you don't know... But I sit side'saddle on the
kayak a lot when fishing... and then I can reach most of the stuff I have behind me.

It might not work for you now when it's cold... but when it gets warm, should be no problem.
Lots of guys do this.
I wear a wetsuit... so the cold water doesn't bother me.

I was here, last week after the big thaw.
The current was vicious... I explored Back Creek and moved up north above the "private" pier...

There was so much stuff from the melt down after ever other cast you had debris on your lure.
The guys at the pier had hands full of leaves in their gear every few minutes.

Today was like being on a lake :-)

Also... water temperature was 48 - 49 degrees. I used an external temp thermometer .

i was also fishing on sunday and i bag me a nice white about a 8-10 inch fish.
it was caught during 730am off bloodworms but soon that wind and tide going out, it was impossible to get hits or i was missing the hits on the bloodworms and the bait wasn't staying still.

Peggy, I will absolutely let you know next time I launch at Waysons. However, I might be bad luck, as my catches there are few and far between.
