  • Gilbert Run State Park/ Wheately Lake

First time out this year. Not a skunk. One small sluggish bass. I hooked two others. The one loss was all my fault. Last time the reel was used, was by my daughter. She had almost no drag. I couldn't set the hook...first thought was I must have a MONSTER....nope. No trout lunch for me today. I didn't see anyone pulling anything out though, so maybe it wasn't just my lack of skills. Great start though. Beautiful day, tons of birds to watch. I love hearing and seeing the eagles, herons and ospreys...the loud annoying geese, not so much. How anything can poop that much and not be a skinny twig...bccb0e4c-a821-446c-917f-139f8a1c4e72.jpgb03bb306-d146-411f-92fb-8ee1148ea719.jpg

I love that lake. However I gave up on it years ago. Unless things have changed drstically the lake has never been a good bass fishery. In fact years ago it was known for bluegill and catfish. It sure looked brassy to me but I think I only caught one small one in about 6 trips.

    Thanks for the post.

I get down there after they stock it with trout. I've never tried for catfish there...it is a great spot to take the family and relax though.

I almost went but I think since they stocked it April 1 and it was Easter vacation it probably got hit hard all week.....it is a finicky place for me. Last time I went (a week before new stocking) Bill limited out and I got skunked....Bill caught 4 of 5 on firetiger roostertail, a color I lacked.

I was using several colors of the flashy spinners that have the minnows etched on to them. Usually sold in five packs. I was trying my UV lures too, from panther martin. Caught the bass on it and missed two other fish. I plan to try them again in the morning at Cosca Lake for trout, bank fishing. Last time at cosca, I caught 19 largemouths...all little guys, but it sure was a blast.

Thanks for the report. Always good to see reports from southern md on here. I've generally only caught bass there at night around the piers in warmer months, but nothing over 14 inches.
