Sunny Severn-Day 2

I decided to follow Mark, Raptor, and John Veil and hit the Severn this morning. Glad I did, in the space of 3 hours I landed about 16 Rock, the largest was 21". Launched from JG about 7:15 and headed south. Before I got under the New Severn River Bridge, I got a hit and landed a 16". From then on I was boating fish. As Mark said, the Wild Cherry along the Naval Academy wall were stunning, the water was flat, no wind at all. Just a truely enjoyable morning of fishing.

I caught most of my fish on the White Bucktail with a glossy black plastic.

It would be interesting, to know... what is in their bellies...
I don't have any experience with catching spawning fish.. until this year.



In the fall... my experience with fat bellies are filled with menhaden etc...

So if those bellies are filled with roe... well that's a jolly good thing for the species.

I really don't know, except for roe. Since these are catch and release, I could not examine the bellies.

I don't know either but I did notice that several of the fat ones I caught yesterday were excreting solid wastes near the boat as I pulled them in. Perhaps they are full of food.

I noticed the same, so maybe they had spawned and are now eating.

John, it got addictive after awhile. So times I no sooner got the line back on the water, that I got a hit. A really good day!

Did you happen to note the water temp out there? I am so so sick of the drysuit and am itching to just launch in shorts again.

The Annapolis data buoy is still offline for real-time temp readings. The newspaper reported 55 deg at Thomas Pt light at 5:00 pm on Wed. That suggests that the surface water temp probably fluctuates between 50 and 55 during the day from sun warming. I have made the transition from my cold weather garments (chest waders and semi-dry top) to my mid-season garments (Goretex rain paints and rubber boots). In another week or so I can move to my warm weather garments (quick dry fishing pants and old running shoes).

A couple of times recently the water has been warmer than the air when we have launched.

I was thinking the same thing...maybe a few more trips in Kokatat pants and then I can switch to warm weather clothing.

But do remember all to cover up from the sun.
