  • Severn River Stripers: Do they go up as far as Round Bay?

Does anyone know if Stripers go as far up the Severn as Round Bay, or do I need to go down to the Rt. 50 Bridge/Naval Academy area to get them? It's easier for me to launch in the Round Bay area. Is it a seasonal thing? Are they only down at the Naval Academy area in April/May, but up the river later in the year (Summer/Fall), or are they just generally all season long only down in the Naval Acadamy area?

    thanks,

    Severn Gary

Very few snaggedline members have access to the Round Bay area. Most of us are limited to zones around the public launch locations. I have no knowledge of whether stripers are abundant in the Round Bay area, since I rarely fish there (once or twice a year from my center console). The current pulse of larger fish in the lower section of the river are here for a few weeks then they leave. I suspect they are on the way out now. Smaller schoolie stripers can be found throughout the river all summer and fall. Later on you can see them under working birds. Otherwise you have to put in the time to figure out where they are.

OK thanks John. My only access in Round Bay is Smith Marina, but it eliminates a half hour drive to the lower river. However, if that's where the Stripers are, that's where i'll go!

        Severn Gary,

My GPS says Jonas Green is 25 minutes from my house in Pasadena.

However, after 8 traffic lights in 6 miles on Rt. 2, and depending on traffic, that 25 minutes often turns in 45 minutes.

        It's worth the drive.

Smith Marina is the only launch point to that section of the River accessible to the public; although they are not kayak friendly with the cost at $20, the same price to launch any size boat from a trailer. For that reason alone, I personally won't do business with them at any price.

I have caught them around the docks but only September/October. That's really the only time I have tried for them thought.
