  • Patuxent River/Mid Bay camping /fishing

    Hello All,

I will be going camping/fishing on Patuxent River Naval Air station this weekend. Hopefully going to try and fish the mouth of the Patuxent for striper, but I wouldn't mind any other fish except CNRs. Has anyone ever had any experience or know that area? I will be launching from Hog point and fish around the mouth of the river towards the route 4 bridge and back. I will be trying some live-lining and trolling soft-plastics.

I fished on base before, but need to take my kayak out there. I've fished from the beach across from the golf course. I met the guy who caught a 42" striper off the rocks there

I've had better luck going towards the bay from Hog Point working the rip rap wall that surrounds the base. Eventually you will get to the remains of the Cedar Point lighthouse but the currents can be wicked there. Straight out from Hog Point is a three legged marker that sits on a hump with deeper water around it. Could be flounder and croaker at the marker in addition to rocks. Going back towards the route 4 bridge you will find interesting ledges off what the base calls fishing point, distinguished by the rip rap "islands" they built up in front of it. Head straight out a couple hundred yards and you will find the river channel ledges. Good luck and hope the winds are favorable.

Thanks guys for the info. I will definitely keep you guys posted, as I will have two days of fishing. Hopefully the wind won't be too hard on me as the forecast is calling for higher winds some parts of the days I'll be there. But as you know with wind predictions they sometimes turn out different.

              Hello All,

I did get out this weekend before the storms hit. On Friday launched around 0800 off of Hog point and headed towards the three legged buoy. The winds and waves were a little rough but it wasn't too bad. I trolled the area in between hog point and the buoy with little action. On the way back from the buoy I did hook up with 3 short stripers off of a BPS iridescent 4 1/2" sally paddletail w/3/4oz jig head. The wind got a little to rough around noon so I headed back in. On Saturday launched again same time but this time headed along the wall south. I had very little action, then decided to target croaker and immediately had both rods bending. I was using croaker rigs on both with 1oz weights and fresh squid. I only caught around 12 fish all above 11" before the storm hit and it was time to go. All in all it was a relaxing time out there and I definitely would go again and try different methods.
