  • Piney Point 6/10

What a perfect weather morning at Piney Point. Got to the ramp at 5:45 and was surprised to see another yak already on the water. I headed out under the bridge with high hopes of some top water stripers. There were lots of fish hitting the surface but they weren't stripers, couldn't figure out what they were. I switched over to a Z-man and began to troll. Started getting lots of short strikes so I downsized to a 3" Gulp. Next thing I know I'm hooked up - with a croaker. This was the first of at least a dozen croaker I caught while trolling (I didn't think you could catch them trolling). I was really surprised when one hit in 10' feet of water when my lure was maybe 5' down - I thought for sure it was a striper. Got tired of the croaker so went back to the Z-Man - that didn't stop them as they had gotten more aggressive. As I was heading back I had a feisty white perch take the Z-Man - I really wonder what they are thinking. Spoke to the other yak guy and he had picked up one undersized striper and croaker as well.

All in all a good day even if I didn't get the top water action I was hoping for.

thanks for the report! my cousin's beachhouse is located on pineypoint rd before the bridge by the post offices and I'm heading up there this weekend, were the croaker in shallow? most of my family and guests are going to be pier fishing while i take the yaks out with my cousin so that information would definitely help!

I caught them on both sides of the bridge (bay and river) and they were in 4 to 5 feet of water for the most part. Fish the flats on either side of the main boat channel.

It runs from the two buoys you can see from the launch directly through the middle of the bridge and out to the first bouy in the Potomac. It's the width of the bridge and goes up to shallower water on both sides - the Potomac side has much larger flats to fish. If you have a FF it will be obvious.
