We were hoping to see you out there, but it is three miles from the launch. Best to stay within reasonable distance of the launch, when you have someone less thrilled about that distance. It would suck to get out there, then realize there's not enough steam left in the tank to get back to the landing and still be having fun.

So if you smack them with a stick will that slow them down long enough to unhook them or is there a better way?

If you cannot release them unharmed...other than the piercing(s) from the hook(s) of your lure...cut the line. The hook/lure will make it's way out on its own. Do the critter and the rest of the bay a favor though; get it tired out and cut the line as close to the animal as you can, so it doesn't end up causing a problem for something else.
