I set out to fish out of Goodhands launch this morning. As I crossed the Bay Bridge, I got a bad feeling seeing all the white caps coming down form the north. When I arrived at the ramp, the wind was steady, but the site was protected, so I remained optimistic. I had originally planned on heading some into Prospect Bay, but the the thought of coming back against the steady 10-15 knot "breeze" didn't excite me, so I went north towards the Narrows. I jigged the bridges as the tide crested and got discouraged by the amount of boat traffic passing through the channel. Not unexpected, but a bummer none the less.
By this time, the wind and current were both moving in the same direction and I decided to revisit my original plan - just not go as far south. I set up a couple of trolling rigs and made my way towards some promising humps I had seen on my charts. As I approached the target area, I was again accosted by numerous, large power boats that ripped right the the area I just marked decent fish. Upon my return sweep, some where still there, but uninterested in what I had to offer....
Deciding that getting more than just a good work out was not in the cards, I set out for the western shore of Prospect Bay to try and travel in whatever shelter I could find for the wind and the current. As made my way up the lee side, I saw lots of bird life including a Bald Eagle and it's nest.
The day was a total bust from a fishing perspective, but the weather was gorgeous and site seeing excellent. Rather than being bummed at the skunk I decided to be pleased with the excellent workout the 10+ paddle provided. I will defiantly go back to Goodhands, but hopefully in the company of some fellow Snaggedliners that can help unlock it's secrets better than I was able to today.
