  • Lapidum 9/19- first rockfish on the yak!

I launched out of rock run just before 8 as the fog was burning off. I was drifting around north of Lapidum looking for smallies. I started with a white spinnerbait since I had success using it last time. Not long after I started fishing I got a hit and the rod had a good bend in it. I thought I had a nice smallmouth, until it came up and I saw the stripes and knew I had a rockfish. I was pleasantly surprised. It was just a little schoolie but still a good sign that they're in the area, hopefully getting ready for the fall season. That was all could manage on the spinnerbait, and the fish didn't seem as active as last time so I moved and switched to a Yum dinger worm that I wanted to try out. After a couple casts I got a strong hit, and I thought I was snagged at first. I ended up reeling in a nice smallmouth. I continued with that and got more hits but none could stay on, I think the fish grabbed the end of the worm without the hook. But since I was getting strikes, I decided to switch to a rapala rip n' rap and ended up getting another smallmouth and a bluegill on board. I was surprised to see glitter boats up in that area since it is very rocky, I guess there was a tournament somewhere. Nothing like out fishing guys in $50k+ bass boat while in a little plastic kayak! It was a beautiful day on the water, and the wind was blowing me up river. I was beat from paddling against the wind to start my drift over, but it was well worth it!

Nice job! There are tons of schoolies around there and large fish down at the flats lower down the Susquehanna. I have tons of success on a mid diving Xrap as well just south of the rocks.

Nice job Jayce! I fished the flats Saturday afternoon and did well. Trolling, I caught close to thirty stripers...nothing over 19". They are starting to show up in the shallows as I was catching them in 13 feet of water. Things should start to heat up on the Susky from now to the end of November.

Nice work on the Rockfish. How did the ramp look at Lapidum, is it still loaded with weeds?

Wow! That sounds like a fun day, even if they weren't that big. I'll have to run down there and see what I can do. It should be better getting around on the flats now that summer is over. I launched from stump point several weeks ago and the boat traffic kept me away from the channels.

I didn't launch from Lapidum, but I wasn't too far from it. I couldn't see the ramp from where I was, but the grass is high in the river right now, so I imagine there's some grass around there.

It can get busy in that channel. Schoolies will hang in the channel between stump and carpenters point in the summer. They are mostly smalls, but it's a good time.
