  • 365 day Maryland Licenses in effect today

The new law goes into effect today, allows anglers the opportunity to purchase licenses for a 365-day term instead of ones that end with the calendar year. A huge win for anglers to get the most value for their $$.

For those of us that fish year round, it is just a way for us to forget when we need to buy a new license and possibly get a ticket if checked and it's expired. Guess I'll have to set up a reminder of some kind.

That's one way of looking at it. U have to maintain an active license anyway with the old system if you fish year round. This way you don't have any gaps and don't need to buy on Jan 1 for most bang for your buck.

If you have had a license in the last 3 years, you can register online through Compass if not already on it using your DL# or DNR Id and birthdate. They are adding sending license expiration notices automatically to the email address on file.

I didn't have a MD driver's license when I got my last fishing license, so I'll be starting over with a new one anyway, come January.

For those who hate getting checked by DNR, DNR will have to check you more often as they cannot be expected to remember when everyone's license expires. It doesn't matter to me as I only fish when I have my fishing license on me.

I get the most "bang for my buck" anyhow.

New year = new fishing license.....

Easy enough to remember for me.

To me it makes little sense. I really cant figure out who this would benefit!

Someone that wants to go fishing for the first time, this weekend. Then they have one license fee that's good through next summer.

Hopefully there was a better reason then that.

It sounded good to the lawmakers, so they can say they saved outdoor enthusiasts $$$ with this. It won't do anything to save most of us a dime, because we fish most of the year anyway. I'll just keep buying a new license on the first of January anyway, then I don't have to remember anything.

The proof will be in the data not the rhetoric. It given the fact that 99.9% of licensees buy later than Jan 1, there should be more savings than the now old system.

No doubt, 99.9% percent of fishing license are not renewed or purchased January 1. I guess if it truly does save money for some people then why not change it. It shouldn't effect DNR checking valid license.

Maybe they're hoping to catch more lapses due to people forgetting. We'll have to wait and see.

Let's hope that isn't an intended reason for them changing it. Let's hope they really did it to appear to save people money. If you don't go fishing until March, you don't need a license until March. but then the following March you will still need a new license; so you're just pushing your annual renewal fee off a couple months, not actually saving money...just postponing it. I'm not trying to argue against it, I was in favor of the change when I heard about it originally...I've just come to realize it doesn't save me any money because I fish all year anyway.
