  • Ft. Smallwood 10/12

Launched around 7 with j. Veil, j.reinch, mark, and myself. Breaking fish and birds immediately and started catching schoolies. Went out towards white rocks and caught 21" healthy fish. All but mark caught keeper size and j.veil, of course, caught the most keepers. Mark did have a good time throwing surface plugs to the breaking fish and catching many. I was at the white rocks and decided to cast along the front and hooked up a 20" catfish, first time for the cat there. Water was flat and winds calm. Nice day on the water.

It's a good day indeed when you lose count.

It's also fun to catch them by various methods -- casting a top water plug for surface hits and a jig spinner combination for those that wouldn't come up as well as by trolling paddletails. I caught no keepers but lots of 12 to 15 inch fish.

I marked many fish in 16 feet of water hovering near the bottom but couldn't get them to chase what I was trolling. Most catches came in 10 to 12 feet of water for all three styles of fishing mentioned above.

Simply a beautiful day on the water.

I headed in a different direction from the other guys. I got an occasional hit, including three in the low 20s, but there were long empty stretches. However, it was an unbelievably calm and mild October morning out there. Those days will soon be fond memories as colder, windier weather makes an entry.

Just wanted to echo what Harry said- a perfect day to be on the water and to land a 22" made it even more memorable. Hope the luck continues. ft smallwood.jpg
