  • Magothy Magic and "Pick"zy dust....

I launched this morning into one of the tribs off the Magothy in search of Pickerel. Rockfishing has been a bust for me of late and I wanted to try something different before I went into work.

I hit the water at 8:30 to 44 degree water and 43 degree air. The winds were calm, the tide ebbing and the water flat. After casting to wood for over an hour, I targeted more open waters, 3'-6' deep, ala BassMoore's T-day video. It worked like a charm.

I started the day with a 22"er and over the next hour landed another 9 fish, the smallest being 17" and up to 21". I used a FatSam in Black / White on a 1/8 pink jig head. It was quite fun on the 5' UL rod I bought for just such an occasion. The spinner I was also throwing came up empty

Unfortunately, I needed leave the water to go to work, but a better start to my day, I could not ask for!

Good show Bruce. You are a quick learner.

Weems was good to me this afternoon -- 17 pickerel in two hours. Eleven of them came from the same 100 feet of shoreline. That was the gold mine today.

Bruce mentioned that he used a 3" Fat Sam paddletail [known as the Fat Sam mullet by 12 Fathom Lure Company in Florida]. This is my favorite soft plastic lure for all seasons (it produced hundreds of stripers last summer and more than 100 pickerel so far this winter). I also use the 4.5" Buzztail (this is an excellent paddletail to use on a bucktail as the tail sticks out past the hair). None of the local tackle shops carry the 12 Fathom product line -- you can get them easily by online order from 12 Fathom. I have had some conversations with the company owner about getting distribution in this area. I personally have no desire to get into retail tackle sales as a business. He is interested in finding a tackle shop in this region that will carry the product line. If any of you have connections with tackle shop owners, perhaps you can convince them to carry the product.

For those of you coming to the Meet and Greet tomorrow, I will have some samples with me and can give out a few here and there. Note that I have no financial interest in the company -- I just like their products. I get samples from my guide in Tampa who is associated with the company. I try to share them with my fishing buddies and other anglers that I meet.

Nice work Bruce! I too was after the pickerel yesterday morning on the Severn, but only managed to boat 7 in a little under 2 hours with several other followers and shakers.

I was thinking about trying the Mag next time...

I have the Fat Sams in about 20 colors -- my Tampa guide often gives me a handful of different colors to try at home. Yesterday I had most success on a clear chartreuse with glitter, but many other colors have worked too.

Here's a short list of the colors of Fat Sam paddletails and bucktail spinners that I carry that they haven't hit this fall.
