  • First post, Maryland M&G?

So this is my first post, and I hope the start of a long and happy experience with this forum. I intend to share all my fishing experiences (though my kayak fishing experience is limited) and hope to gain a lot of knowledge and skills along the way. Is there a Maryland M&G coming up? I saw that one this month is cancelled. A little about me: I'm an environmental scientist, and just got my first kayak last year as a graduation gift for getting my M.S. It's a perception sound 12' sit inside kayak and I've used it probably 5 times in freshwater and once in saltwater, launched out of kent narrows last fall with a friend of mine. Its got the anchor trolley system, and I've mounted a fishfinder onto it as well, which I've finally gotten to work correctly with the duct sealant trick. I live a ways away from the Bay but I don't mind making the trip to fish it, as long as I know the spots, and techniques, I'm going to use beforehand. I've worked as a mate on a rockfish charter boat, so I know a little about how to fish for them, but certainly wouldn't call myself an expert. I probably will go out fishing this weekend, probably wade into some trout streams, but I was wondering if anyone is going out on their kayaks soon? I would certainly be interested in meeting up and fishing if anyone wants to do that. Anyways, thanks for taking a look at this post, and I look forward to making, and answering, many more in the future.

    Hey bud,

Welcome to the forum. It is a great place to gather and share information! Congrats on getting your degree

What kind of fish are you looking to pursue? Rockfish, Pickerel, Perch? Do you have the cold weather gear to be able to go out safely? I was out this morning and the water temp was only 31 degrees so dressing for safety is super important this time of year

I may be going out on Sunday. I haven't decided exactly where yet. PM me if you are thinking about going out.

Yeah I'm definitely going out, trying to get ahold of a friend and pin down a spot. I have some cold weather clothing, but I don't have a wetsuit. I would like to get a shorty just to throw on underneath my clothes, just in case I went in, I would have another layer of protection if I happened to fall in. I was fishing in freezing rain up in lake Ontario for king salmon, pike, smallmouth, and browns last year, and in the dead of winter on a little runabout last winter; so I do have the necessities (coat, sweatshirt layers, underarmour, warm neoprene fishing gloves, hat, etc.). As far as fish to pursue, I've got a bunch of tackle, I guess it's all probably geared towards mostly casting as opposed to trolling, but I do have some for that type of fishing as well. I don't really target a fish species, if I have a spot to go to, I just go and hope for the best, and bring whatever tackle I know works for what's biting. Will PM you to see what your thoughts are about Sunday.

I am in charge of the So. Md catfish meet and greet...I am trying to find which area will be best. We'd like to do Bushwood, but fish may not be there by the 12th so the back up is Marshall Hall. I'll let folks know after exploring both areas this weekend

Nice! Fished around newburg off of a friend's dock a few years back and caught a bunch of 18-25" blue cats, about 1 every 5 minutes or so. I didn't know they were blue catfish at first, or else I would've kept all of them, instead I only abided by the regulations for channel catfish. Kind of regret releasing the rest. Oh well. When I was part of the fish tissue study in the Anacostia, we were sure not to release any invasives. Got my first up close look at a snakehead (many in fact) and really want to catch some this year.
