  • 2016 MD Striped Bass Regs

    Thought everyone should know these.

Be sure to be checking the maps for closed spawning areas this spring. They change throughout the season

Guess it's still too early. They haven't posted the limits yet.

Limits and size have been posted. The only change is during trophy (spring) season. The slot has been eliminated and replaced by 1 fish 35" or larger per person. Summer stays 2 over 20", only 1 of which can be over 28".
Spring season is 4/16 thru 5/15. Summer is 5/16 thru 12/15

I got it in an email from DNR. Here's a link to that message.

I am pleased with them. I especially like that they kept the post-June 1st season at two fish at 20", as opposed to 18".

It's good the summer minimum didn't decrease, however it would still be nice if there was a slot size so the big girls were C&R only.

I'd like to see the minimum size for commercial be raised to 20". As long as they can keep 18" fish fewer will grow to be 20". Flounder come to mind. Commercials can keep 15", how many 17" have you caught?

That would be the best case scenario; however, unless every other state also participates in it, it wouldn't be effective. It brings to mind the red drum fishery. Most states, especially on the Atlantic Coast, do not allow you to keep a red much over 27". There are a few states that allow you to keep one, but all in all what the slot size has done for that species is incredible. We are fortunate to live close to one of the best bull red fisheries in the world and it is because of a multi-state collaboration. I'd love to see the same thing for rockfish, but I just cant see it happening any time soon.
