I just moved to the Catonsville area from Georgia with my wife (who is from the area) about a month ago. While I've visited a number of times, I've never fished here and had not been out on the bay. I've done some very limited fishing for landlocked stripers in Georgia, but have mostly been a largemouth guy and have no experience fishing in tidal waters. So I've been lurking on the forum and doing as much reading as I can to figure out the fishing opportunities near me. Last Wednesday I decided to get out on the bay for the first time.
I launched from Southwest Area Park on the Patapsco with visions of hitting both the area near Hanover Street Bridge and the ponds up river (this also gave me a different option if the conditions on the larger water were not suitable). This ended up being too much for one day and I only hit the harbor area. Anyways, I started off by paddling out towards the bridge and when I approached the deeper channel I decided I'd start off by trolling a little to get a feel for the area. I cast my first rod back to my right side and placed it in the rod holder, grab my second rod to cast to the other side and the first rod bends over. I figure I snagged on something (even though it was a floating lure) because I am just drifting with the current and haven't even got the second lure wet. I grab the first rod and whaddayaknow? There's a fish on the other end. I reel in a good looking 21 3/4" rock. Surely the first of many. But another couple hours of trolling and some casting, not another bite. It was a great day to be out paddling, regardless, and I had a blast. Can't wait to get back out there.
