  • Bay Bridge 7/17

Hit the east side sunday evening from 5pm to dark. lots of current with the south wind and incoming tide. It was bordering on being a little too rough but I didnt have far to go from the G dock launch location. Left the LL gear at home and fished jigs the whole time.

Think I hooked fish on the first two casts and it was a pretty steady pick after that with BKDs and zoom fluke baits. Key was a 45 degree cast upcurrent allowing the bait to touch bottom and hopping it back past the pilings. Most fish were on the upcurrent side in 18-25 feet of water. Kept two in the 22-25 inch range and released several others. Saw a few others catching as well.

Must have been you that I ran into out there on Sunday eve? I was out there from 1:00-5:30 or so and didn't get a single hit. People were consistently catching all day long, couldn't quite figure out why I was getting skunked. I don't get out to the bay much but I watched what other people were doing and tried to reproduce both jigging technique, bait color and boat/cast positioning. I was using 6-7 inch flukes with 3/4 - 1oz jig heads. Was definitely bouncing them off the bottom. The only thing I can think of is that my baits were a little too big. Everyone else seemed to be throwing baits in the 3-5 inch range. Visited basspro yesterday and stocked up on smaller flukes and jig heads. Going to give it another shot on Saturday morning.
