  • Magothy River, Thursday Morning, July 7

Spent about two hours on the Magothy this morning in the area of Spriggs Pond and Cool Spring Cove. Trolled and cast spinner baits and small rattletraps which resulted in 30+ perch, two nasty chain pickeral and a tiny striper. Most caught in about 5ft of water. Water temp was 82 degrees.
Interestingly, a dragonfly landed on the tip of one rod and supervised my fishing for about ten minutes ( not sure if you can see it in pick).
Hope to make the M+G this weekend.

Nice catching and nice post... but I have to speak up on behalf of the Rodney Dangerfield like species that you mentioned in your post. You see, they "don't get no respect". The Magothy is know for having hosted a chain pic population for many many years and some of us consider that they are really fun to catch and release, especially when they are active in colder water temps and other species have left the area or gone deep....perhaps catching them is akin to an acquired taste?

    tight lines,

I've acquired that taste. Chain pickerels in our local tidal waters have certainly whetted my appetite!

I consider them skinny LM bass with teeth. They hit spinners like bass. They suck down soft plastics like bass. And they savage poppers with a big splash, just like bass.

Plus, they continue to entertain us when the other fish we chase are in their cold water stupor.

      Pickerels definitely have my respect.

Thanks for the report! I pulled two citation picks out of the magothy in the same day this winter. I love em!
