  • Quick Report: Bay Bridge 7/23

I made my first trip to the bay bridge today. I met The Kegs, The Kegs' cousin, Pinch and saw someone else out there with a Maryland Kayak fishing shirt, but I dont know who it was. I also met Grilled Sardine launching from the G Dock as I was coming in. Anyways, in the first three hours, Pinch was the only one catching fish, hes got them dialed in out there. The Kegs and Pinch had already left and I decided to give up on Striper and try for some Perch to avoid the skunk. I moved to the shallower pilings in about 7 feet and started using a 1/4 ounce road runner jig head with a 3" gulp alive minnow. I caught a few smaller perch on the north span and moved to the south span. I finally picked up my first Striper of the day at 14". Not a keeper, but I was happy to finally see some stripes.

After the Striper, I caught several nice sized Perch 9-11" that I decided to invite to dinner. I worked my way back out to deeper water with my Perch jig, hoping to catch a keeper Striper and picked up more nice Perch. I moved back to the north span and finally hooked a large Striper. I got it to the surface and was immediately disapointed to find it very sickly with a lot of sores on it and quickly put it back. I stayed on the same spot and caught some more Perch and was finally rewarded for my time on the water with a 22.5" clean Striper. Here's the whole day's catch:

It was nice to meet everybody out there today, I hope to fish with you guys again soon.

Those are some hefty perch. Nice work on the stripers, too. Hopefully, the bite is still hot tomorrow afternoon.

Great bag of fish you got there. I love those road runners for perch. Did you catch the keeper rock on the road runner as well?

            Thanks for the report.

Are you heading down there tomorrow? I was thinking about trying to get wet launching from G dock tomorrow.

Mike--Yeah, I'm meeting Michael (Redfish) and Joe (Friday/Comeonfish) around 1pm and fishing into the evening (assuming I don't sweat to death before then). There' s a wad of thunderstorms coming that might foul things up. We'll see what happens. If you want to meet us at G dock, you can come watch me fall in, too.

Where are you finding perch that large? I seem to only pull up 4-5 inchers using live nightcrawlers.

In my opinion you have to use lures to catch the bigger perch consistently. I caught them around the bridge pilings in anywhere from 6-14 feet of water.
