  • Kayak Crabbing 07-31-2016

I decided to try some kayak crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay on my new Outback LE over the weekend. It has been a while for me, but it was time to get some of those tasty crustaceans. I just finish making my new propstick and moving all of my gear over from my old Revolution to the Outback. I crabbed the outgoing tide in 7 to 4 feet of water and netted just over a ½ bushel of these delicious creatures. I used chicken necks for the bait on a 500 foot trotline. I had several crabs that were just short of 8 inches. When I got home, I streamed the large to jumbo size crabs. With the media and some of the large crabs, I removed the backs and cleaned them so I can try them in a fried crab recipe. All in all it was a good day with calm waters and low winds.

Nice going Martin. I have been doing well myself with the crabs. I started with trotline from the kayak last year and was looking forward to this year. I have been out twice so far this year and scored in the 1/2 to 3/4 bushel range each time. There are some nice crabs to be had, only to get better. Good luck.

From reports I have been reading, the crabs are numerous and large. Way to go!

When you got your three quarters of a bushel how long was the line you using?

do you throw all the crabs in the basket, then cull them at the end at the launch?

Nice Set up. I've been doing about the same, on the Severn. 2-4 dozen each outing. Still haven't been able to fill the basket yet. Here is a pic of my rigged PA. The front hatch allows me to cull in a 5 gallon bucket and transfer to the basket on back. Do you ever use a motor or are you strictly mirage drive? Thanks for sharing the pics and report.IMG_0847.jpgIMG_0849.jpg

I run a 600' line. It took a few hours. On occasion, I stop and white perch fish and let the line soak. Generally, that is when the bait has been eaten on quite a bit, and ahh yes, there are the beer breaks.

Yes, I use a cull basket. It seems to be very important, as to how some of the DNR police measure the crabs. Some of the police that have checked me, will ask which is the keeper basket and which is the cull basket. I have become quite the crab mearsurer. Some of the police want to see what you are using to measure your crabs.
