I was able to make it out this morning, and got to Jonas Green by 6AM. After I had left home, it had occurred to me that I may have forgotten to put my kayak seat in the car. When I checked before launch, sure enough it was missing. Doh! I wasn't going to let that stop me though, so I found a towel and some old sweat pants in my car, which I folded up to give some padding for my butt - even if I don't have the back support. Though it was uncomfortable, and I have a really sore back right now, it was worth it .
Today, I planned to use my trusty jig that I've caught perch on in the past, and also try out some chartreuse Gulp mullets that I bought in preparation for the OC M&G. You all already know what Gulp baits look like...so here's a pic of the other jig I used:
It's a 2" Bass Pro squirmin' squirt on a jig head with a spinner arm. I love these small tubes for panfishing. I've caught crappie, LMB, yellow perch, and white perch on them. And they're cheap too!
I tried the Gulp mullet, and got a few hits, but I don't think any of the fish had big enough mouths to swallow enough of the bait to get hooked. When I made the paddle back across the river, I dragged the Gulp mullet behind me to see if anything would bite. I ended up foul-hooking a sting ray on it, which was pretty exciting. I had hoped that it might be a really big rockfish...but it turned out to be one of those winged monsters. I cut the line to get him off.
When fishing, I kind of just tried out all the coves and docks that were on the other side of the river, and also ventured a little into Weems creek to check it out. In total, I think I caught about 20 white perch. I let the smaller ones go, and kept anything that I'd be willing to clean and eat. It seemed like the smaller ones were scrappier than the larger ones...so they were all fun to catch. I brought home 10 fish. I filleted 6 of them for fish tacos next week, and scaled/cleaned 4 of them for pan-frying:
The bite slowed down around 11, and that is when I ended my trip. I was exhausted, and I took my time getting back to the beach. This was the relaxing day on the water that I was hoping for.
