We fished almost every evening in the surf this trip. The fishing was not outstanding but there were plenty of pan sized Whiting, Croaker and Spot to be had. This was great for the kids and new fisherman with us. They caught plenty of fish and enjoyed the experience. We also introduced several first timers to the sport and they became hooked.
We caught the majority of fish on Fish Bytes and Sand Flees. The Fish Bytes had the edge on numbers but the flees caught the bigger fish with the biggest Whiting around 13”. We also caught 2 small Weakfish and one 13” Flounder on Fish Bytes.
We caught a dozen snapper blues over the week in the mornings and evenings on gulps and metals. Me and Codfish tried to nab a flounder from the surf all week with nothing. I must have dragged a Carolina rigged gulp grub over 2 miles of bars, cuts and troughs with no love. I did catch a mess of small croaker doing this though.
We launched fish heads two separate nights in search of sharks but the crabs had better ideas and cleaned us out. Not a single take or run from a shark.
I don’t know if it was our section of beach but we heard better flounder reports coming from other locations around us. We had a nice deep trough running between the bars and a good break in the outer bar flushing out. The trough was full of pan fish but nothing else. It was kind of strange.
I expected the small fish from the surf this time of year but was surprised we didn’t get the interest of a shark. I must have read 20 reports over the last several months talking about the number of sharks coming from the beach in that area. Guess they went on vacation the same time we did.
