  • Fall Pike in Rocky Gorge or Piney Run?

    Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of targeting pike over the Fall once temperatures have dropped some. Has anyone any experience with this species in either Rocky Gorge or Piney Run?

If you have any suggestions of sites to try at either location, I'd much appreciate it - I'm mainly thinking of targeting them with large spoons and deadbaits from my kayak. I've not fished either Rocky Gorge or Piney Run so far - I've been working Triadelphia (closed).

    All the best, Neil

Great thanks - what lure/bait did you catch it on?

They can be caught there using standard bass spinnerbaits. I recommend a trailer for bulk!

Thanks for the note about spinnerbaits.

Has anyone tried deadbaits? Medium sized Smelt maybe? - I can buy fairly cheap packs of these from my local grocery store.

Never tried dead bait, but they are supposed to work in the winter.

Also if the spinnerbait bite isn't good you can try paddle tail swimbaits and suspending jerkbaits.

This one took a Texas rigged lizard lol. It was close to 40 inches if I had to guess.

I have also had good luck with large crank baits or floating minnow type baits (Rapala) in a pattern similar to the local bait fish for Pike. Shoot for a model that will dive down to just above the weeds.

I don't believe there are any pike in Piney Run but it has been stocked with tiger muskie in the past.

Thanks Charlie - yes, I've undertaken a bit more online research and you seem to be correct about no northerns in Piney Run. I'll take a crack at Rocky Gorge. ATB Neil
