  • Chesapeake Bay - Rockfish & Reds (4k video)

Here's a Chesapeake Bay outing from late August 2017. The location was lower Maryland on the western shore. The schoolie rockfish action was fast and furious, with a bonus visit from a couple of very nice redfish. This was the first outing with the Torqeedo Evolve drive, and it was also the inaugural trip with a custom St. Croix rod from the talented Brandon Jessup. That rod has some fine mojo and will be treasured for many years to come!

Nice video. 90+% sure that I passed you guys that day in my one and only power boat excursion as I saw two yaks working some skinny water the boat I was on wasn't getting close to. It's been an amazing year for us with the reds in lower Maryland

Yep, that was likely us. I couldn't be happier that quality reds can be found just over 2hrs drive from my Baltimore home. I've made a handful of trips down and each time I feel I'm putting the pieces of the puzzle more and more together. I will say that I've had the best luck on low boat traffic weekdays. I had an incredible trip on a quiet Friday evening, only to return to the same conditions on jetskier-filled Saturday eve. The fish activity was unsurprisingly nonexistent with jetskiers passing by us on the flats, no more than 40 yards away. They did give us a nice wave and smile though [emoji6]

I've yet to get on a reliable spec bite like I have the reds. They seem more spread out in Maryland waters at the moment. I'm a bit more accustomed to NC and SC spec fishing where when you find one you'll likely have them stacked up in similar size range. Do the Maryland specs tend to do that more as the weather cools?

Depends- like you point out jetskis are killer to the bite...must be the impeller noises of the water pumps...but it will kill the bite...I have had phenomenal luck with big speckled trout this year...but I have been using the lures and working the baits the way I usually do to catch trout...so maybe it is a bit of luck combined with being prepared to be lucky? What was really ironic was my last big trout was caught just as I was telling Bill this is where I caught a good trout last year as we trolled side-by-side across a flat...the most trout I have caught has been five on one spot this year on maybe twenty-five casts...and it is no secret that every single one of my big specks were caught on a Bass Assassin. Late season Specks do tend to school up and hang out in ambush points...this is the time of year I normally have had the most success with specks

All makes sense. My 2 keeper trout have come on paddletail out towards the outer edge of a flat, in deeper water (where one would expect trout to be). Both times I've been trolling as I pedaled in to shallower parts of the flats in search of reds. I likely would have had better trout luck had I not been so laser focused on the spot tails [emoji6]
