  • Columbia, MD w/Daughter - 8/20/11

Today I was able to hit a local lake for a 1.5 hours in the afternoon with my daughter. It was a great time. The lake seemed in nice shape. There was weed growth in the shallower areas, but I was glad to see that it wasn't choked with weeds everywhere. We were the only people "on" the water. Some folks were fishing from shore, but didn't see any of them catching anything.

My daughter caught this largemouth bass on a gulp alive minnow.

I caught 3 largemouths, all on gulp alive minnows too, but no pictures of mine. Biggest bass was 14 inches, with most of them being 9-11 inches long.

    Catching bass from kayaks rules!

Very nice. Which lake is that? I thought it was Elkhorn, but not sure.

          Decent Place to Fish

Yup, it's a decent place to fish. There's several lakes in Columbia, MD. The Columbia Association lets you kayak and fish them all if you complete a registration form. They then register you and give you a free sticker to put on your kayak.

One of the Columbia lakes is currently being dredged and that has ruined the bass fishing there. It's my understanding that the lake in this photo will begin being dredged soon too. So that's a little depressing.

I have yet to encounter any other people canoeing or kayaking when I've gone fishing there. We've always caught bass too, all the way up to a 19 incher.
