  • April 22nd Patapsco Report

Pat (yakscientist), John (silasvirus82), and I met up yesterday and launched from the Riviera Beach area around 6am. We launched to calm winds, somewhat stained water, and mostly clear skies, trolling soft plastics and plugs at a variety of depths mostly ranging from 5' to 15'.

Pat got a 12" in the shallows and ended up landing a few more nice fish ranging from 20" to 26" on plugs and Zman soft plastics. He also got a rogue channel cat on razor clams which is awesome. He and John might add some more details about their trips below if they want to.

I headed north across the channel towards Ft. Carroll and jigged some thick arches at 40-50' but didn't get any hits. The wind picked up pretty rapidly so I circled around the fort and was able to land a 26" and a 22" on an XR12 in bunker color in about 17' of water. It was a unique scenario, as the wind and waves were blowing against the back side of the fort, but the fort was reflecting waves back, creating a washing machine effect. As soon as I entered the area my FF lit up with surface level clouds of bait, and both fish I landed came in that mishmash of waves and bait. A neat set up that I'd never seen before, but looking back it makes sense that the bait got caught up in the turmoil and made an easy meal. The wind picked up to 17mph gusts, which was surprising given the forecast, but we all sheltered in the creeks and continued fishing. John and I called it around 11:45 and Pat stuck it out like a champ and ended up getting his biggest fish after we left.

Overall, given some of the recent reports, we were happy to land some solid fish. Hopefully this warmer weather will ease the fish into a more active pattern. Looking forward to good times and tight lines ahead!Fort 2.jpgStriper Fort 1.jpgStriper Fort 3.jpg

Awesome report with catching photo proof, AND Pat is a fishing machine! Also cool to see a sit-inside way out near Fort Carroll, you have some big cojones, especially near a wachine machine tide!

You were the fishing machine yesterday Matt, going all the way up to the fort and back while I stayed in the shallows. I think we made the most out of a whacky weekend (given the cold temps preceding it). I wouldn't call myself a fishing machine, I'm just stubborn, and I like to stay out almost the entire time I set aside when I give my gf my float plan in the morning through text (something I suggest everyone do). And my gf can only complain about my obsession so much, because she was the one who bought me the kayak as a gift. If only she had known.... Anyway, it was a very nice day out there, and if the water was 10F warmer, I bet I would've cleaned up on perch, but surprisingly, I didn't catch any (only tried for a little while though). If you guys are looking for channel cats, razor clams did the trick for me yesterday, in water around 15 ft deep. I also finally managed to catch a fish on an eliasv swimshad, so I was pumped about that. I remain fishless on both my xr12 and 3D crystal minnow, though I'm told they're good baits. I don't ever have them out for very long, I just end up catching a fish on a soft plastic, and then switching to only soft plastics from there on out.

This year, despite the cold temperatures, has been pretty good for us fishing wise. I've never caught striper trolling before April I think, and this year, I started catching them in February. Since then I had 5 successful trolling trips in a row, including one which produced a PB, and the streak ended Friday in the Severn. But...Sunday I redeemed myself.

Nice work guys! I have a friend who lives in that area, and it is one of my favorite places to paddle. I had good luck there last fall, so I'm eager to give it a shot this spring.

These two made me look bad yesterday. I live here and didn't catch s*%t, haha. I tried a variety of tactics in the shallow water down to 35'+. That's why it's called fishing.
