Kent Point Marina....
107 Short Rd, Stevensville, MD
Your gps will try to wind you around the neighborhood once you get down there...
but just stay on Kent Point Road until it ends... make the right.
Open 5am... 6am Sundays.
Sign the waiver at the "Bait House" $11.50 fee.
The Launch... is at the other end of the marina... right now there are a bunch of
crab pots there... there is a path between the pots.
THERE IS A "SMALL" dune you have to go up and over...and thusly back.
There is no boat ramp.
It is a short beach over the "dune".
THIS IS a small commercial Marina.
Family run... and VERY friendly.
People here are very serious about fishing, their crab and oyster boats.
What an incredible beautiful launch right on the bay.
Every year.. I would launch out of Romancoke.. and make a pilgrimage...
to Bloody Point. Just to do it. That's 5 miles... on a straight line...
one way... at least 10 miles total.. and who goes in a straight line.
Usually I would post 18 miles or so...
I had not tried to make a post spawning adventure for rockfish before this trip.
Two weeks ago on The Outdoorsman Radio Show - Allan Ellis Outdoors
5am Saturdays... he had mentioned that the DNR had reported four miles of stripers
exiting the bay down near Deal Island...
go figure I have been seeing all the boats heading south the last month.
I launched at the Marina... about 6am... winds were expected to be north...
Beautiful calm at the launch... albeit 50'F air temps...
As soon as turned around the point and headed up into the Eastern Bay...
it should have been "calm" but the fetch from the days before had some serious
chop to it.
I had a plan.. unfortunately it was against the wind-chop-fetch... but I continued
Slopping water over the bow... sponging out water from the deck... it still was a beautiful day.
It didn't matter if I caught fish... just another adventure... without 18 miles of paddling.
I stuck to my plan.. knowing the depths... and some spots... wind against me...wave chop
across the bow.... taking on water.
NOTE: for times like this... ie: 35inches to keep.. I have marks on my kayak...
20inches/25inches/35inches... such that I can quickly approx the size....
Well the sweet spot occurred in about 30feet of water the fish were at 15-20foot.
I got into an area... I caught.... one.. then another... then it just exploded...
I had never seen the sonar like this in the Spring.. must have been the exodus
of the spawn.
I had a plus 25' and a plus 30" both at the same time... only known to me after
the quick measure on the kayak.
Total was 3 over 30inches.... four over 25inches... 12 over 20inches... and about 10 under 20.
I was blown away... a week later writing this I am still in awe...
Of course all were let go.....
You see the Ospreys and the Eagles catching fish... you are on the water
for magnificent sunsets and sunrises...
You are on the water for gloomy rainy days....
and thus concludes the Winter/Spring Epilogue .
