  • High Water in Kent Narrows

Fished Kent Narrows around Hog Island with my friend Mark Bange this morning. The water level was the highest I have seen in a while. This was at the launch. The water was actually lapping on the blacktop of the parking lot.

Trolled around the shorelines and the breakwater. Was trolling with 3/8 jigs and 3” paddletails with fair results. Landed 6 Stripers in 4 hours of pedaling between 15-17”, with the largest at 21 1/2.

An interesting note, when I first started fishing around Hog Island, there was the beginning of a cut at the lower end. Today I was able to pedal through the cut, with the water level at 4ft. As I was trolling around the island close to the shoreline, my track on the FF showed I was on old shoreline.

I think it’s high water everywhere. Yak67 and I were returning to the ramp at Piney Point at high tide. It’s right next to the bridge to St George’s Island and a major spot for working boats to transit under. An oyster dredging boat with a mast was approaching and we both looked at each other and said, “He’s not going to make it”. Second’s later there was a loud bang and then screeching as the mast slammed the bridge and then got wedged under it. The crew released the mast and they were able to get underway but both the bridge and boat had damage. Water easily 18” higher than normal.

After beautiful morning sky like this, the fish we caught were almost an afterthought:

If the water had risen much higher, I could have pedaled to my van:

I fished the Kent Narrows area on June 2nd and had similar (but not quite as high) conditions. When the tide went out it was ripping. Granted this is only my second year in a kayak, but its been the first time Ive been unable to paddle north on the east side of the breakwater below the bridge due to current. I had slighter better results than you but I also had a much smaller results.

I really like the upgrades they made to Goodhand's launch.

What launches are over there? Thinking I may need to try that side soon, this side has been lousy.
