  • Thursday Slower/Lower report

Big Mike and I hit the water early this morning down in St. Mary’s to catch the falling tide...neither of us had a lot of time to fish so we were off the water shortly after eight headed home...saw one CNR but otherwise we managed to avoid the CNR sleigh rides...we fished jigheads and Bass Assassin Sea Shads...90% casting (to avoid CNRs) and it was really fun...we ended up with seven striped bass over 20 inches...Mike and I decided we were all C&R fishing today so all these legal keepers are still swimming...my Biggest was 23 inches. All in all it was one of those near-perfect “memory maker” mornings.

Nice work guys. I'm glad to hear that the bite has picked up in southern MD waters.

You lucked out with the rays. A few days ago Mark and I fished in many spots around the edges of Eastern Bay from my boat. We saw rays everywhere. In the most egregious area, there was a swath of water in 3' to 4' depth that looked like coffee with cream half a mile long and 50 yds wide. We saw numerous rays flapping around in the stirred up zone. They were mating or feeding there by rooting around the bottom. At that same location 11 days earlier, when the water was clean, we loaded up on stripers there. This week, we got no bites there, in part due to the murky water. Fortunately we found fish in some other areas and had a strong catching day (between 50 and 75 fish from 16" to 21" -- all by casting light jigheads and paddletails).

      Good news, Ron.

I'm glad to hear the bite down south is healthy.

Is your June M&G still on track? I hope to make it.

Not the best photo perhaps but I tried to capture the mess the rays were making that John noted above:

They left quite a trail of muddy water.

We may need to delay a couple of weeks to make it worthwhile while for the guys driving two hours to get here...Big Mike, Gary and the Southern Maryland's locals are having to earn every fish we catch. It definitely is no where near what it was this time last year...the Specks are just now starting to show and no Redfish yet...definitely a couple of weeks off.

Did y’all hit the Bay or stay on the Potomac?
