  • Conowingo flood gates open

How bad will this be for the bay? I don't know how often they open the flood gates but the news people are making it sound like this will spread the poisons of the conowingo sediment all the way down to Virginia Beach.

This year they are saying is a bad as 2003 when hurricane Isabelle hit. The conditions are bad enough they postponed the Bassmasters tournament that was going to start today, due to safety concerns with all the high water and debris coming down the river.

Don't blame them I was biking along Deer Creek last night and saw a log getting washed downstream and it was keeping pace with me on the bike at around 10 MPH.

The sediment problem has been going on, last week the Lapidum ramp was covered in it prior to all the rain.

They opened between 12-17 spill gates in addition to the generators on Tuesday and have been running them ever since. Yesterday the report the report was 200,000 cfs of water running on the river. It's going to be a long time before the effects of this settle down.

According to the talking heads on the weather channel, we will see a couple of days of decent weather, but next week will be “groundhog day” of this past week as the Bermuda High sets up offshore and the jet stream dips in the east to bring the subtropical moisture plume out of the south...Again...heavy rains beginning Tuesday...

As I recall, studies concerning dredging the sediment buildup behind the Conowingo Dam indicated that mostly it's the upper Chesapeake Bay at risk from the debris behind the dam. The studies concluded that a far larger impact on the Bay's health is the human development on the western and eastern shorelines from the dam southward which in total feeds more storm runoff into the Chesapeake than what's happening at Conowingo now. Record rain this month is having an adverse impact for sure, but not just from the dam.

It's running at 343k now...to give a sense of scale, this time of the year in the morning, they usually run one small gate in the morning for a few hours, which is 6,000 cfs. I have wade fished the river between Deer Creek and the dam. Going to be a long time before that happens again this year.

As a point of reference, I ran across the bay from the South River to Eastern Bay this morning in a friend's boat. We saw clean water and virtually no floating debris. I suspect that will change as the Susquehanna River water gradually migrates down-bay.

Some of the small creeks up are still somewhat clear as well and with all the mud in the main river is pushing the fish in there. I found a nice school yesterday that way in 3-5 feet of water. Caught allot of schoolies and some decent fish and lost a big one that hit near the yak.

This was it yesterday with 19 gates open, 5 small and 6 large generators with 354,000 cfs running. Last night they opened 29 and had an involuntary evacuation notice to Port deposit residences.
