  • Saint Inigoes Dolphin Watch

Baitball contacted me late yesterday and wanted to fish St I. Yak67 and I had fished the end of Saint George’s Island on Friday, only 3 miles by water away, with zero success, so I wasn’t super optimistic but every day is different. Arrived at 5:45 to some clearing storms and calm conditions. As I gazed out I saw a tell tale spray of mist and then a large pod of dolphin emerged in the creek. They weren’t just cruising through, they were hungry. We watched them swim towards a bank, pushing fish in front of them, and then started smacking their tails and jumping to stun the fish. This went on for almost 30 minutes. Beautiful to watch, but might as well have set off a nuclear bomb where we were for the impact on fishing. In the next 4 hours I managed 2 and Manny got 5 or 6. Although there were bay anchovies around we didn’t notice any bunker the whole morning. No bunker, no bigger fish.

So no fish pics but did get this nice one of Manny.

Shame our normal August fish variety has evaporated...normally this time of year we would be working on a limit of speckled trout and Redfish...then fill up the cooler with perch...don’t know what to say other than the minus 9 degree night’s in February did them in..

      Mike,

It's always a pleasure to fish with you and Ron down there in St. Mary's County - Ron hope you get well soon.

Even though the fishing was a bit slow today, I enjoyed the company, the calm conditions, and the beautiful sky. We'll get'em next time.

What a great opportunity to see dolphins in action, even if they disrupted your fishing.

        Nice report and photo.

In years past, I've seen Dolphins in Eastern Bay and videos of them in the Severn. I haven't seen any in person this year but I read in the paper that some were sighted in July on the Patapsco near the mouth of Bodkin Creek. That's pretty far north for them.
