  • Breezy Breton Bay

After a dismal spring fishing in BB I had written it off for the year(because we know fish don’t move around). It had been a week since I’d been out and the breezy NW winds would have kept me off except I remembered that BB orients well for that situation. Got to the ramp at 6 to a stiff breeze but very manageable water. Started trolling a paddle tail by a very large visiting barge and push boat.

Soon after clearing it I had a small stripper on. Good sign. Hit two of my favorite humps with no action so switched over to perching. Caught this lunker.

Let me tell you, those 3” rocks put up a tussle. Soon found some quality perch in open water at about 5’ depth. Put enough in the cooler for dinner and switched back to trying for strippers. Found them on another favorite hump, caught at least 20 ranging from 13”-16” with some smalls in the mix. Happened at low tide with no current, go figure. On the way back in I picked up a straggler and heard a clinking noise on my rod. Clinking noise on a rod is not a good thing. Broke off my main guide.

I knew it had one arm broken but hoping to make it to winter before repair.

So to make a short story long I believe we can add BB back in the mix, even on days when we’re not trying to hide from the wind.

Good deal Mike. You woke Ole B.B. back up for us. I have not been there in about a month, and then it was just perching for fun. Nice report, and I love those 3' inch monsters, you had to decide, do I have grass on the lure or is it just fowled up?

      Mike,

I know the feeling. Here's a beast of a striper that I hooked today while fishing for perch:

I like to think these little guys are learning their craft by striking my lures. I hope we meet again...in 4 or 5 years.

Tough luck on your rod guide.

Those little stripers are so beautiful - such clean, distinct lines and iridescent shine to them. I assume that catching little ones like that is indicative of a healthy fishery, right?

I don’t know if catching little ones means a healthy fishery. Certainly it’s great that they are there, but are they in numbers indicative of a healthy fishery, I don’t know. I’ll wait on the survey reports to tell me that.
