Shore Fishing with Kids - Bill Burton Fishing Pier

Hey guys, I am looking to take some younger kids (ages 4-7) shore fishing and was looking at Bill Burton. Has anyone here fished off the pier before? I'm looking to catch some rockfish as well as spot/croaker/white perch. Is the area safe for kids? Also what lures/bait would you recommend?
