I have not had much success fishing in tidal waters in the Severn and in Eastern Bay recently. I decided to visit two Eastern Shore lakes and try for some freshwater species. At the first lake, I cast a Bignose spinner, 2” twister tail, 4” Buzztail, and live minnow to shorelines. I had no bites. I began throwing a 12 Fathom Buzztail in Green Hornet color toward the middle of the lake (very shallow, but deeper than the edges). I began getting an occasional bite. I ended with 4 largemouth, 1 pickerel, and a fat 11” crappie. I was pleased.

After lunch I drove to a second lake. Over the next hour, I caught 14 pickerel up to 22". One came on a Bignose spinner, one on a paddletail, and the rest on live minnows fished on a jighead.

After my struggles to find just a single pickerel in 3 days of trying in the Severn, the steady pickerel pullage felt very nice. I note that in both lakes nearly all the fish were caught in one general area, representing less than 10% of the lake surface.

Nice to see a freshwater report. I’m more of a crappie than pickerel guy so enjoyed seeing a good one.
