  • Maine trailer registration

So I had a small trailer given to me. It will work perfectly for a kayak. Only issue is the guy didn’t have a title for it. I’ve heard Maine has a really easy process for registering a trailer but from the website, it looks like an in person inspection is still needed (I’m not driving to Maine for this).

Can someone send me the 411 on this?

    Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I just researched other threads and wanted to add the trailer is not homemade.

Perhaps it's best if you contacted the Dmv where you want to register it and find out what it is you need.

I’m in the process with http://nationaltrailerregistration.com/
No inspection that I’m aware of. Just a bill of sale and some other docs. I need the limited POA notarized, but I will be doing it this week.

It must be titled before Maine will license it. I know because I had to title mine in Md before I could renew in Maine. Also, Md regs say that you must have a trailer registered in Md before you can license one in another state. It is only a problem if you get caught though.

I have my utility trailer title in Maine and as stated, it's not really legal but nothing has happened for 15 yrs. I use it several times a year. Boat trailers have to have Maryland tags and title to get ramp permits.

Just got confirmation- rego completed. Tags in the mail. I bought the trailer in DE, so I had to pay Maine sale tax ~3%. 5 yr reg was ~$120.

HAWG - I see your main (Maine) question was the trailer inspection. My trailer had Maryland inspection.

I’ve seen many Maine registered trailers but never understood why. Based on the $120 for 5 years I’m not seeing the cost advantage over Maryland where I pay $127 for 5 years ($51 every 2 years). Is it just the 6% tax that folks try to avoid (looks like a 3% edge)?
