Its been a long cold winter and for the first time this year the SMOG was back together. I joined a Gary and Ron at Abel’s Wharf at 6. Interestingly they have blocked off the normal spot for parking vehicles with trailers to regrow grass. They’d be far better off to just dump gravel there, but what do I know. It was cool and cloudy but with the wind direction we were very sheltered and had no issues with waves or heavy gusts. Here’s Ron shortly after we launched.
I soon heard fish on over the radio and Ron had a 26” striper in the boat. Gary picked up an 18 and 20” by the launch. I’m thinking good day coming. Well, let’s just say there were really long periods of silence other than the annoyed ospreys. The fish were not on any normal structure. They were purely random drive bys over 13-15’ of water with no structure around. I picked up a 16” that was snagged near its tail that fought like a 16 1/2” and Gary got another 20” and a couple schoolies. In almost 4 hours we caught about 6 fish total. All the fish we caught were fat, healthy footballs. Visibility was at best 18” but the water was up to 65 degrees and Electric Chicken was the “hot” color.
If you’ve fished here in years past you’ve seen the guy living on the sailboat moored a couple hundred yards from the launch. Winter was not kind to his boat and there’s a new piece of structure in the water.
How long it will stay there is anyone’s guess but it should be attracting fish if still there in a month.
Even though the fishing was tough it was fantastic to be out with SMOG again. Always good for some laughs.
