  • Patuxent - The Dead river

I have tried fishing the Pax from Bowie to Jug Bay.
I have about 12-15 half day paddles in this area over the last 5 years.
2 years ago we did get a few fish on one outing. But overall, this stretch is DEAD.
I launched at 5:45 this morning and went upstream, I was is flooded pads, I was in back creeks with picture perfect cover, the cover, grasses, pads, timber is world class,, The only thing missing is fish.

Trying to put my finger on why this area is so dead,, I covered acres and acres of flooded pads, Not a single spook, crash or splash in the pads or grass in 5 hours.
I have been in pads in ponds, Blackwater, mattawomen, etc and not caught fish,, but you can see/hear them,, The Pax is just dead!!

I know there is 5-7 sewage plants up stream,, is the water nitrogen rich/ oxygen poor??

It's a shame, this is 10 minutes from my house, but done wasting my time there

I would have to disagree. I fish a certain stretch you are talking about and I caught over 59 shad during the run this year and last. I’ve caught white and yellow perch, smallmouth, rainbow trout, and stripers.

Water clarity and suspended solids must play a big part,, water visibility today was 6-8"

I was in some back channels that had everything a fish could want, but yet no fish, I was throwing top water buzz, frogs, weedless paddle craws, chatter baits, etc.
Picture perfect, yet no fish, not that I was not catching, nothing was there.

Again I hate to disagree. I fish that river everyday almost and I caught yesterday and today.

Looks like I am going to have to buy you some beer (or lunch) and take you fishing (or is it take "me" fishing) ??

Same here, I fish it later in the summer near Bowie and always catch plenty of catfish and fallfish.

Like I said, "bottom suckers" are not a problem
